Three indicted on federal charges for robberies in city, suburbs

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Three men are facing federal charges for a series of armed robberies at gas stations, jewelry stores and other business throughout Chicago and several suburbs.

Tyree Craig, Jacobi Pickett and Jarryl Williams are accused in the series of nine robberies and one attempted armed robbery between October 2013 and this February, the U.S. Attorney’s office said in a release.

Typically, one or more of the suspects would brandish a black semi-automatic handgun while demanding money, jewelry or Newport cigarettes, prosecutors claim.

The suspects tried to disguise their appearances, but video surveillance revealed a similar pattern of clothing and appearance, prosecutors said.

Craig, 29, and Pickett, 21, were accused together in an indictment returned Wednesday by a federal grand jury, charging them each with one count of robbery conspiracy, eight counts of robbery and two counts of brandishing a firearm during a violent crime, authorities said. Pickett was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors accuse them of participating in seven robberies together, including:

• Dunkin Donuts, 3910 West Touhy Ave., Lincolnwood, on Oct. 20, 2013;

• Phillips 66 gas station, 1234 Sheridan Rd., North Chicago, on Oct. 21, 2013;

• Shell gas station, 9600 Crawford Ave., Skokie, on Oct. 21, 2013;

• Shell gas station, 3 East Algonquin Rd., Arlington Heights, on Oct. 31, 2013;

• Marathon gas station, 242 Waukegan Rd., Glenview, on Oct. 31, 2013;

• Shell gas station, 5055 Touhy Ave., Skokie, on Nov. 30, 2013; and

• 7-Eleven, 500 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette, on Nov. 30, 2013.

Craig alone was charged with another armed robbery at Ted’s Jewelers, 5334 S. Archer Ave., on Dec. 13, 2013, authorities said.

Pickett was also charged in a separate robbery, during which he allegedly took $73,000 in jewelry from an EZ Pawn store, 4080 Southwest Hwy. in Hometown, on Feb. 19, according to prosecutors.

Craig and Pickett will be arraigned on the charges May 1, authorities said.

Craig and Williams, 42, are also charged in a separate federal indictment stemming from an armed robbery attempt Jan. 10 at James and Williams Jewelers, 7020 W. Cermak Rd. in Berwyn.

A store security guard shot Williams in the hand during that incident, which involved two other unnamed suspects, authorities said.

Craig and Williams have pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery conspiracy, attempted robbery and brandishing a firearm in connection with the Berwyn incident, authorities said.

All three men remain in federal custody as authorities continue to investigate.

The FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force, comprised of FBI agents and Chicago Police, led the investigation, and were assisted by local police in the suburbs.
