TAMPA (FOX 13) -

You may not know Asha Sing, but this singer, songwriter, actress and dancer says she's here to stay.

Her first single "Mercy" debuted number seven on Billboard's "Hot Single Sales.” It's a festive fusion of American pop and Indian bhangra.

"I had written the words already, kind of like it was a therapeutic thing, so girly. And then I had found this tune, just driving in the car…and it just kept going through my head over and over again," she explained.

The University of Miami grad wrote the song during an internship at a Nashville studio where pop artists like Taylor Swift and Jordan Sparks got their start.

"I came into that internship being like almost like a secretary and I came out a published songwriter so, that was awesome!" she exclaimed.

Asha said other multicultural artists like Shakira helped pave the way.

"And I thought about the way that Shakira uses her culture within her music, and it really honestly hit me in that moment on stage, 'I was going to use my culture to make my music unique and to help me stand out,' " she said.

According to her father Joel Madhukar, "She started singing at the age of two and a half, and at the age of 6, she was performing already on stage."

However, the ultimate test to see if Asha could really sing came from no other place than the Apollo Theater in New York City.

"I sang, 'I Will Always Love You,’ Whitney Houston, which, now thinking back at it, I'm like, 'I was crazy, to even try that!' "

They crowned her a winner and Asha's career was born.

She sang a sample of her latest original track, called "Rooftop.” It's part of a new album she's working on.

However, even before its release, Asha has 19,000 Facebook fans and growing iTunes sales. Her marriage of music and marketing is working, and she's devising new ways to fuse Indian and American trends beyond music.

"There is I think a place for makeup, for fashion, for beauty," she said.

Asha grew up listening to Bollywood songs with her dad and now she's carving a new modern path to her own success. A beautiful voice, a talented mind, and with a name like Asha Sing, musical destiny seems inevitable.
