Gov. Snyder pushing to expand EAA package

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - For more than a year, Gov. Rick Snyder has been pushing to expand the Education Achievement Authority to include more failing schools, and, for more than a year, he has failed. Now, based on the latest nose count at the state capitol, the governor may lose this battle again.

Critics of the EAA say it has not worked, so expanding it isn't logical.

The state school superintendent, Mike Flanagan, even broke the state's contract with the EAA while calling for other ways to handle failing schools.

"There's a point where the EAA is even saying itself that it's not really to take on large numbers," Flanagan says.

The governor could get some votes for his EAA package if he was willing to make a deal.

In a rare peek into the inner workings of the legislature, some lawmakers say they'd be willing to trade a vote for a vote.

this Macomb county republican says he is voting no on the governors bill..but if the governor gave him $100 million for some income tax relief, he would vote yes.

"If I could get $100 million in the first year in tax relief, I'd take it, yes, I would," Republican Sen. Jack Bradenburg of Macomb County tells FOX 2's Tim Skubick.

Republican Sen. Joe Hune from Brighton has also proposed a deal with the governor, but did not want to talk about it on camera.

The governor does checks in on a possible deal, saying "it depends on the circumstance but we need to think about the kids as our top priority."

The city of Detroit says workers and retirees have approved pension cuts, a crucial step to emerging from the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The city reported results Monday after two months of balloting ended July 11. A judge still must hold a trial to determine if Detroit's overall bankruptcy plan is fair and feasible, but support from retirees is vital.
