Matt Cooke, Minnesota Wild wait on suspension

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cooke is in New York today and will be suspended for his knee to knee hit on Tyson Barrie. FOX 9 Sports Director Jim Rich says he expects Cooke to get a minimum of a five game suspension for the hit.

“When you get flown to New York it’s usually five games,” Rich said. “He’s considered a first time offender by the NHL. You have the Seabrooke hit, three games for that elbow where he knocked out the guy. The question is are head shots worse than knee shots?”

Cooke has a checkered past when it comes to being called into the NHL league offices and has done a good job of cleaning up his image. That hasn’t changed the view from the Avalanche side of the equation. Barrie is the best offensive defenseman on the team and the Cooke hit changed the scope of game three.

FOX 9 SPORTS DIRECTOR JIM RICH GIVES HIS OPINION ON THE HIT

"I think it's the play of the game.We lost our best offensive defenseman. I think it could have been a five-minute major and he'd be out of the game. I think that would have broken their momentum; we would have been on the power play."- Avalanche Head Coach Patrick Roy

Rough Past:
2008-2009- Suspended on two different occasions for two games for hits to the head of an opponent.
March 7, 2010- Hit Marc Savard in the head causing a concussion but did not receive a suspension.
February 9, 2011- Received a four game suspension for a hit from behind.
March 21, 2011- Suspended for the final 10 games of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs for an elbow to the head.

Game Four:
After dropping the first two games in Denver, the Wild pulled out a 1-0 overtime win on Monday night. Game four is Thursday night at 8:30 at Xcel Energy Center.
