HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Former North Stars coach Glen Sonmor turns 85

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Former Minnesota North Stars and Fighting Saints coach Glen Sonmor had friends, family and former players on hand for his 85th birthday party Tuesday night.

Sonmor coached the North Stars to their first-ever Stanley Cup appearance in 1981, but the reason so many people showed up for his birthday was because he cared about the players as people.

“The players all knew that he’s a guy they’d go to war for because he’s a guy they’d to go war for them and no one was going to fool with them without somebody paying the price,” Lou Nanne, who was Sonmor’s boss with the North Stars, said. “I mean I could tell you stories when he coached in the NHL, one coach was yelling at our players and he says, ‘One more word out of you, and you and I are going at it right after the period.’”

“They’re not all going to play forever, but they’re all going to be people forever,” Sonmor said of his players.
