BAMN fights to have standardized test scores dropped from admission requirements

Posted: Updated:
WJBK - The activist group By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) is calling for the University of Michigan to drop standardized test scores from its admissions requirements, believing it would help level the playing field for minority students.

"We're going to have to demand that they actually take steps to admit black and Latino students, instead of just talking about it," says BAMN attorney George Washington.

The request comes the same day the Supreme Court voted to keep the state's ban on affirmative action.

Others, however, believe the elimination of SAT and ACT scores would make the admission process harder for universities, especially the public ones which often have up to 70,000 applicants at a time.

"In terms of the admissions process, it would throw a huge wrench in the process. It would be something that would take several years to implement," says Leah Beasley of Beasley College Consulting in Farmington. She prepares students for college admissions and has worked in the admissions offices of Harvard and the University of Michigan.

Some say a fair and equal admission process wouldn't be an issue if all education were equal.

"If you're doing holistic admissions, you have to look at what it is the people have overcome, what it is that their real life experience is, and if you look at those things you've got to admit those students," says BAMN member Shanta Davis.
