High-speed chase through Eden Prairie ends at Edina ER

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (KMSP) -

He led police on a chase all the way the emergency room. When asked why, he said his father was having a heart attack -- but police say he made it all up to avoid getting busted for driving drunk.

This bizarre story began when a viewer by the name of James Carr asked Fox 9 News to do a story about his challenging situation with Eden Prairie police. Carr contended he was unfairly arrested for speeding while trying to rush his elderly father to the hospital, but the criminal complaint suggests there's a different side to the story.

The speed limit on Highway 212 is 60 mph near Valley View Road, but charging documents accuse the 56-year-old Carr of hitting speeds of 90 mph several times during the early morning hours of April 3.

For 8.2 miles, Carr -- along with his 84-year-old father, who was sitting in the passenger seat -- eluded police at high speeds, weaving through traffic and defying orders to pull over.

The chase finally ended at the emergency entrance of Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina. Carr's father went inside to get checked out, but Carr was arrested.

Police say that Carr's 84-year-old father claimed to be having a heart attack, which is why the two men say they were speeding; however, officers also say that Carr got out of his vehicle and yelled profanities at them while reeking of alcohol. Authorities say he also refused a field sobriety test and Breathalyzer at the scene.

As for Carr's father, emergency room personnel determined the 84-year-old was not having a heart attack and was doing just fine. Police have not arrested him.

Eden Prairie police, along with Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman declined to discuss the case. Meanwhile, Carr has retracted his offer to be interviewed to tell his story. Instead, he began lawyering up and said he would not comment on the situation once Fox 9 News brought up the details of the criminal complaint; however, he did offer a sit-down interview with his attorney in the future.

Carr does have a long list of petty traffic violations on his record, as well as alcohol-related arrests dating back to 1989. Last January, he was convicted of driving under the influence.
