A Lincoln, Nebraska public school district apologized Wednesday for a flier telling fifth-grade students to avoid ratting on their bullies.
Parents at Zeman Elementary flooded Facebook with angry comments about the flier that advises students to refrain from telling on bullies as it only bolsters a bully's hatred of the victim. THE "RULES"
The flier contained a list of rules and explanations, the "rules" are as follows:
1. Refuse to get mad
2. Treat the person who is being mean as if they are trying to help you
3. Do not be afraid
4. Do not verbally defend yourself
5. Do not attack
6. If someone physically hurts you, just show you are hurt; do not get angry
7. Do not tell on bullies
8. Don't be a sore loser
9. Learn to laugh at yourself and not get "hooked" by put-downs
NO EXPLANATION FOR FLIER
Lincoln Public Schools communications director Mary Kay Roth told the Lincoln Journal Star the flier was not approved to be sent home and called it "a staff issue." She did not provide any more details about how the flier ended up in students' take-home folders, but teachers will talk to all fifth-grade students to clarify the district's policies on bullying.
The district's message about bullying is "very different" from the one sent home, student services director Russ Uhing told the Lincoln Journal Star.
