WELFARE FRAUD: Rich folks who 'ripped off the system' make Minn. court appearance

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Colin Chisholm III and his wife, Andrea Chisholm, have returned to Minnesota from Florida and made their first court appearance.

Andrea Chisholm had her bail raised to $300,000 and Colin Chisholm's bail remained at $300,000.

The Chisholms are accused of accepting more than $165,000 in public assistance from various government programs designed to help the poor. The alleged welfare fraud occurred over a 7-year period, from 2005-2012, during which the couple owned a luxury yacht and had nearly $3 million in their bank accounts.

"These rich folks ripped off the system," said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

The Hennepin County sheriff's investigation started at the couple's home in Deephaven, Minn. and expanded to multiple locations across the United States before coming to an end in the Bahamas late last month.

Both will be back in court on April 29th to contest their bail.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
