CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Eight people, including two firefighters and a police officer, were hurt Tuesday evening in a fire in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

Emergency crews responded about 6:10 p.m. to the two-story frame building in the 11600 block of South Michigan Avenue, Fire Media Affairs Chief Larry Langford said.

Authorities initially received reports of a person trapped and called for several ambulances after finding multiple people hurt when they arrived, Langford said.

Two police officers were in the area about 6 p.m. and saw people trapped on the second floor of the building, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. The officers instructed a 15-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy to break a window and jump down into their arms, he said.

Two firefighters suffered non-life-threatening smoke inhalation injuries, Langford said. One was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and another to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park.

A police officer also suffering from smoke inhalation was taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island in good condition, Langford said.

At least four other civilians also suffered smoke inhalation, and were taken in good condition to area hospitals, according to Fire Media Affairs.

At least one person also suffered a hip injury, he said. Some of the injured were also treated at Advocate Trinity Hospital, in addition to Christ, Little Company and MetroSouth Hospitals, he said.
