1 arrested after 2 backpacks found left unattended at marathon finish line

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- One man was arrested in connection with two unattended backpacks left at the marathon finish line Tuesday, exactly one year after the Boston Marathon bombings.

At about 7 p.m., Boston police and the bomb squad responded to the Back Bay to investigate the two backpacks. The bomb squad sent in a robot to inspect the bags and eventually detonated both.

One man was taken into custody Tuesday evening in connection with the incident. He will be charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and possession of a hoax device.

A witness near the finish line saw the man with the backpack being detained.

"All of a sudden you hear this guy go, 'Boston Strong, Boston Strong.' So I turned around, he's right next to me walking by and there's two Boston cops standing on the corner over there so they turn around, they caught wind of it an they go 'Hey, you come here' and he goes 'Get away from me.' So another cop came around him, grabbed him, started struggling with him over the backpack, they pulled the bag off him and then they tackled him and took him down," he said.

Boston police say that a rice cooker was found in one of the bags, but they were not able to say what was in the second bag as the incident is still under investigation.
