How to resign the right way

Posted: Updated:
Fox 2 Job Shop - Beth Grossman of Angott Search Group in Rochester offers the following insight on how to resign from your current job

As a job seeker:

Be prepared to resign from your job professionally. Write a professional letter or memo.  Letter should state only the basics.

Think about the conversation before it occurs and be prepared for counter-offers.

Do not feel that you must provide your current employer details for leaving, but be very polite and appreciative of them.

Less is more-say less about your new job to co-workers- bragging about your new job is a "no-no."

Negotiate outstanding salary, vacation, compensation or commission prior to your departure.

Provide adequate time-provide adequate notice, usually 2 weeks.

Offer to help train your replacement or assist your employer in finding your replacement.

Unless you are sure the counter will be a better situation, do not consider it. Studies show a high percentage of employees still leave an employer within a year of accepting a counteroffer, some being forced out.  You may never been seen in the same way by your employer once you take a counter offer.

Your dedication will be questioned in the long run

Always take the "high road" with your current employer. Even in an exit interview, remain positive about your experience, don't make statements you may later regret.

Do not burn any bridges. It is tempting, in an exit interview, to be completely open, but this may come back to haunt you and does not help your career. You have already decided to leave.

Remain productive during your "notice" period.

Be prepared to leave immediately upon providing notice and do not take this personally. Company policy often requires this.  Before leaving, be sure you have contact information for your key co-workers and supervisors. They can remain in your "network" if you depart on good terms.

Remember that your final impression does make  difference.
