Court Orders Man To Hold "I AM A BULLY" Sign As Punishment

Posted: Updated:

A man in South Euclid, Ohio, was ordered by the courts to sit at an intersection, holding a sign that proclaims "I AM A BULLY."

Edmond Aviv of South Euclid sat at the busy intersection of Trebisky and Monticello for 5 hours Sunday, holding the hand written sign, saying he is a bully who picks on children with disabilities.

Municipal Court Judge Gayle Williams-Byers ordered the 62-year-old to serve this public punishment.

It was part of his sentence for harassing his neighbors, the Prugh family, that includes two adopted African American children with multiple disabilities.

According to police, there were a number of incidents over the 15 years they were next-door neighbors that went beyond name calling.

"He shoveled dog feces onto the car, the working vehicle of the one son who's a caregiver," Judge Williams-Byers said.

"What a disgrace this man is to humanity. Because what he did, inexcusable. Nobody can do something like that to other people," neighborhood resident Aldo Canzona said.

Jessica King came from Mentor with her son Conner to talk to Aviv.

"I am glad that this judge made an example out of him. And, is people like them that use words that shouldn't be used and stereotypes that shouldn't be used, and you know it hurts," King said.

Many passersby agreed with the unusual sentence for this unusual bullying case.

"He deserves some punishment and public humiliation is a good one," resident Gloria Gunter said, "I don't feel bad for him. He got pretty much what he deserved."

In addition to this public punishment, Aviv was sentenced to 15 days in jail. Also, he must perform 100 hours of community service and attend anger management classes.

Speaking for the family, Michael Prugh said he hopes the situation is behind them.

"Hopefully, it's just the end and we can all just move on," Prugh explained.
