5th suspect arraigned in beating of Steve Utash

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - A quick hearing was held Saturday at the juvenile detention facility for yet another suspect allegedly involved in the brutal beating of Steven Utash. This time, it was a 16 year old who politely addressed the court at one point asking for a tissue because his hands were sweaty.

Because of the age of the suspect, our cameras were not allowed inside the hearing. Family members had no comment after it was all said and done. The teen, who is just two weeks away from turning 17, faces a charges for assault with intent to do great bodily harm and ethnic intimidation. Prosecutors say he was among the first to throw punches back on April 2 after Utash accidentally hit a 10 year old boy with his truck then stopped to help. Surveillance video shows Utash being beaten by an angry mob. He's is now awake after ten days in a medically induced coma.

"It makes you melt in your heart because he's talking which we were worried about," said his son Joseph Utash. "He said my sisters name so there's memory there, so that's good."

The tally now stands at five people ranging in age from 16-30 who face charges in the assault. A judge set bond for the four adults previously arraigned at $500,000. The teen charged Saturday is being held on $400,000 bond. His family tells Fox 2 he's an "average teenager" who was considered a "good kid" in the neighborhood. The referee would not let his parents hug him when they asked.

The teen is due back in court April 17.
