Coney Island teen charged with murder in death of cop after fire

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Brooklyn teen who allegedly set a mattress on fire, which spread to part of his apartment building has been charged with murder after a police officer died days after responding to the fire.

A grand jury indicted Marcell Dockery, 16, with felony murder, according to the Brooklyn district attorney.

Dozens of firefighters and police officers responded to the apartment building fire in Coney Island on Sunday, April 6, 2014. Officers Dennis Guerra and Rosa Rodriguez were riding in an elevator to the 13th floor when the smoke overcame them. They suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, officials said. Guerra died three days later.

"The senseless act of setting that fire tragically led to the death of NYPD Officer Dennis Guerra. His partner Officer Rosa Rodriguez suffered critical injuries," Kings County DA Kenneth Thompson said in a statement. "Both dedicated and courageous officers did not hesitate to risk their lives to save others. We will bring the Defendant to justice for these terrible and horrific crimes."

Dockery supposedly admitted to police that he set the fire because he was "bored."

The DA said that the teen could face 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Guerra is survived by his wife, Cathy, and four children, the NYPD said.

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
