No criminal charges in St. Louis Park Middle School drowning

Posted: Updated:
ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -

No criminal charges will be filed in connection with the drowning of 12-year-old Abdullahi Charif at the St. Louis Park Middle School pool.

Charif was found at the bottom of the pool during a gym class the morning of Feb. 27. He died two days later at Children's Hospital in St. Paul.

The Hennepin County attorney's office determined there is not enough evidence to file charges against the school district, teachers, staff or anyone else present at the time of the incident.

"This decision has been made despite the fact that no one has yet explained how Abdullahi was able to sink to the bottom of the deep end of the pool and drown without being detected by those responsible for his safety," attorneys for the family said in a statement.

While no charges will be filed, the family still hoped to learn more details about what happened.

"They cannot accept that ‘accidents happen,' under circumstances such as these," a statement said. "A tragedy like the death of a child in a middle-school swim class should simply never be allowed to happen. "

Anyone with information is asked to contact attorneys Fred Pritzker or Eric Hageman at 612-338-0202.

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
