Family: Steven Utash out of coma, breathing on his own

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -- Steven Utash, the suburban Detroit motorist brutally beaten after he stopped to help a boy he accidentally hit with his pickup truck, is awake and breathing on his own, according to family members.

Ken Utash said during Let it Rip on Thursday night his brother did mention some of his family's names. "When they first took him out (of the coma), the first thing I heard (him say) was 'help me, help me,'" said Ken.

Utash had been in a medically induced coma for days following the April 2 on Detroit's east side. "He's agitated a lot. He's been in bed a week now on his back," said Ken.

"Daddy is breathing on his own now," said Steven's daugher Mandi Utash. "Baby steps."

On Friday, a fourth man was arraigned in the beating. A not-guilty plea was entered Friday for 19-year-old Latrez Cummings. Like the other adults in the case, Cummings is charged with assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

A 16-year-old is charged as a juvenile with assault and ethnic intimidation.

They are accused of beating Utash with their fists and feet after he stopped to help 10-year-old David Harris. Harris was struck after stepping into the path of Utash's truck.

Utash remains hospitalized with severe head injuries. The boy suffered a leg and other injuries.
