PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett has become the first candidate for governor to officially file papers to appear on the primary ballot.

Bennett filed signatures and more than enough $5 contributions from voters on Thursday to qualify for the August Republican primary ballot if they are all confirmed.

Bennett was able to file before the official opening at the end of the month because he's running under the state's clean elections law. He'll qualify for more than $750,000 in public financing for the primary race.

Others seeking the GOP nomination are Mesa Mayor Scott Smith, state Treasurer Doug Ducey, former GoDaddy legal counsel Christine Jones, state Sen. Al Melvin, former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and former California congressman Frank Riggs.

Fred DuVal is only well-known Democratic candidate.
