DETROIT (WJBK) -- Police say a Detroit homeowner opened fire on two home invasion suspects Wednesday morning, fatally wounding one.

Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody says the two suspects, a male and a female, broke into the home on the 19000 block of Asbury Park just before 6 a.m. Woody says the 47-year-old homeowner fired several shots with a rifle, striking both suspects after they broke a window and tried to get in.

The male, who was learned to be 15 years old, not 19 as originally reported, was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead. He was identified by family Thursday as Damontae Moorer. The female suspect was struck in the leg.

The homeowner wasn't injured.

Jarmain Scott, a Motor City Youth football coach, says his first practice with Moorer was that day. He says Moorer skipped practice to go meet the girl even though he tried to talk him out of it, apparently having a bad feeling about it.

"That's why we [are] trying to save these kids lives. We try," he says.

Moorer's mother, Divana Webb, tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue her son is easily influenced and believes he was manipulated by the girl to break into the home. She says the girl knew the homeowner and was breaking in to retrieve some of her own things. Police have not confirmed this.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office is expected to review the incident, but Woody says it appears to be another case of a Detroit homeowner defending his property.

This is third such case reported by FOX 2 in the past five weeks. In early March, a 17-year-old was fatally shot outside a home on Penrod Street. On March 25, a homeowner with a valid concealed weapons license fatally shot two suspected intruders at his home on Dexter.
