SEARCH ENDS: 'All efforts exhausted' for missing Minn. father, son

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -

After 4 days, authorities in Colorado are calling off the search for a missing father and son from Minnesota, saying they have "exhausted all efforts."

"As many know, the search continued for Damian and Evan again today. The search has been thorough and comprehensive, and it is in the judgment of the professionals that they have done all they can," Andrea Bouzrara, spokeswoman for the McManus family, posted to Facebook. "They believe that they could not have survived."

Damian McManus, 51, and Evan McManus, 19, haven't been seen since last Wednesday. Their last credit card transaction was for breakfast that morning, before the two set off to go hiking near Echo Lake, about an hour west of Denver.

Friends and fellow parishioners at St. Joan of Arc held a vigil just the day before the search ended to pray for the pair's safe return.

Earlier on Wednesday, investigators were able to trace a phone call from one of the hikers to a friend. From that call, searchers were able to learn more about the hike they planned to take, but at the conclusion of the day, the two remained unaccounted for.

STATEMENT FROM MCMANUS FAMILY

"The McManus family wants to express their deep gratitude for all of those who were involved in the search for their loved ones. They have also been encouraged and held up by all of the love and prayers from all over the world. Katherine and Lauren are comforted in this time of great loss by all of you and by their faith in God. Please continue to pray for strength of spirit and surround them with love."

WEATHER + TERRAIN CHALLENGE SEARCH

Rough terrain and winter weather hampered search and rescue teams, who say any tracks left by the hikers would have been covered with fresh snow by now.

"We don't know where they went, what peak, what equipment they have with them," Alpine Rescue spokesman Bill Barwick said.

More than 50 volunteers joined the search on Tuesday.

Katherine McManus, the wife and mother of the missing hikers, arrived in Colorado on Monday to help with the search. She was in Mexico on a spring break trip with her daughter, and discovered on Sunday that her husband and son hadn't returned home as planned.

SURVIVAL SKILLS

Family friend Ira Gurewitz said Damian McManus has military experience and he's hoping the two dug a cave in the snow and are waiting for someone to find them. In the meantime, Evan's girlfriend started a Facebook group to spread information about the search.

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
