AMES, IA -

Iowa State's annual Veishea celebration turned sour on Tuesday night as large crowds rioted, overturning cars and a light pole that struck and injured a student.

Police had the rioting under control by 2:30 a.m., but with more Veishea events taking place this week, police are set to have "serious discussions" regarding law enforcement procedures for the remainder of the week, according to the Des Moines Register.

Hundreds collected at Stanton and Chamberlain avenues just after midnight. The student struck by the pole suffered a head injury. His current condition is unknown.

Veishea is one of Iowa State's oldest traditions held each spring. Founded in 1922, it's made to showcase the Iowa State community through "a wide variety of educational and entertainment events." According to Veishea's website, alcohol consumption is not allowed on campus as part of the University's alcohol policy and all events are alcohol-free. The rioting occurred just off campus.
