Police continue to search for any students involved in the massive party-turned-riot that took place over the weekend.
Police tried to shut the party down after being called to the scene over reports of stabbings. The police issued dozens of arrests and citations when students started to lose control, but it wasn't until a 17-year-old struck an officer in the back of his head with a bag full of alcohol bottles that the party took a nasty turn.
Deltopia started out as an innocent beach party, but gained thousands of participants over the course of the all-day drinking event. When the police arrived in the afternoon, about 50 people were arrested and 44 sent to the hospital with injuries, according to ABC 7.
The officer who was hit received 20 stitches in his head, according to the Sheriff's office spokesperson, Kelly Hoover.
University Of California at Santa Barbara student president was offended by the claims against Deltopia students and notes that 80% of the students arrested were out-of-town residents.
The evening took a rough turn around 8p.m. as more police arrived in response to reported stabbings. In hopes of scattering the crowd, police used tear gas. This caused hundreds of students to flee at once.
The party turned into a riot, with students ripping traffic signs out of the ground, setting mattresses on fire, and destroying cars.
The riots ensued until 1a.m. despite the police use of rubber bullets, tear gas and pepper spray on the hundreds of students.
Buzzfeed.com compiled an article that shows how students used social media to show their experiences at Deltopia.
