Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A Los Angeles police officer was hospitalized in good condition today after being shot in an exchange of gunfire with a man who was critically wounded in the shootout, which occurred inside the building housing the Los Angeles Police Department's West Traffic Division, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 8 p.m. Monday at 4861 Venice Blvd., which is adjacent to the LAPD's Wilshire Station. A meeting of the Olympic Park Neighborhood Council was underway in the building at the time.

The unidentified officer, a seven-year veteran, was shot seven times by a gunman with a semi-automatic pistol, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said. He said the officer was in stable condition and in good spirits. The officer also received good wishes from Mayor Eric Garcetti.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Beck said the officer owed his life to his bulletproof vest. However, police later determined the officer had not been wearing the body armor at the time, said LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh, a department spokesman.

Daphne Brogdon, an Olympic Park Neighborhood Council member, told the Los Angeles Times she dived for cover under a lectern with a fellow council member. Brogdon said she counted about 10 shots in the exchange of gunfire. Members of the council stayed on at the police building after the shooting, Brogdon said.

Following the shooting, a police bomb squad searched the area around the building, including the suspect's vehicle, but found no explosives, Borihanh said.

The identity of the suspect remains a mystery.

"We don't know who he is, where he came from,'' said LAPD Cmdr. Dennis Kato. "We don't even have a name on him.'' Kato said the officer was struck multiple times.

Speaking after visiting the officer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Beck said the officer had saved his own life, and that of his partner, a female four-year veteran of the LAPD, by returning fire. The suspect was struck four times and was in critical condition after undergoing surgery, police said.

Detectives were examining a pre-dawn shooting at the Wilshire Station on June 25 in which two detectives were wounded to see if there was a connection to Monday night's shooting, said LAPD Officer Sara Faden, a department spokeswoman.

"At this point it does not appear they were connected,'' she said.
