UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION: 'We shouldn't be pulling the rug out,' Franken says

WASHINGTON (KMSP) -

The U.S. Senate passed legislation Monday evening to renew long-term unemployment benefits for an estimated 3 million Americans, including more than 35,000 people in Minnesota.

Action in the Republican-controlled House remains uncertain.

SEN. KLOBUCHAR CALLS ON HOUSE TO RENEW UI

"Senate passed bipartisan unemployment extension tonight. It's now House's turn to #RenewUI," Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) posted to Twitter.

SEN. AL FRANKEN STATEMENT

"I've heard from people across Minnesota who want to work, but while they're looking for a job, they rely on unemployment insurance to stay in their homes and put food on the table for their families. Unfortunately, our economy hasn't fully recovered from the worst recession since the Great Depression and the unemployment rate remains too high. We shouldn't be pulling the rug out from under people. They are trying to catch up in an economy that is recovering, but still has a long way to go.

"I'm pleased that the Senate was able to take this step for millions of hard-working Americans, and now I urge the House to take up and pass this important bill."
