9 things to buy, 3 things to sell this spring

What to buy & what to sell this spring
by the Cheap Chick

Every quarter of every year brings new savings opportunities. Here are the items you should be buying now, as well as the items you can sell readily at your local consignment store or garage sale.

WHAT TO BUY

April

1. Rain gear – it has a limited shelf life, so retailers bring items in and then mark them down fast.

2. A Cruise – April isn't in the traditional holiday travel season, so prices should be cheaper this month. Book now for a less expensive, last minute vacation.

3. Secondhand items – April is the best month to pop some tags. People clean out their homes for spring, meaning there is a ton of fresh inventory at Savers, ARC Value Village, etc.

May

1. Athletic gear – look for stock-up sales at the start of any exercise season. Also check out sales on hiking, camping and fishing gear.

2. Mattresses – apparently, there is a mattress-selling season, and it kicks off in May with really great sales. Wait for Memorial Day Weekend for the best coupons and discounts.

3. Spring Clothing –spring fashions came out in February, when we were buried in snow. Now everything is on sale to make way for new inventory, so you'll save up to 75% on clothes you can actually wear right now.

June

1. Dishware – In two words? Wedding season.

2. Gym memberships – everyone has forgotten about their New Year's resolutions, so take advantage of those empty gyms now and get a great deal on a membership. NOTE – you WILL have to haggle the price down.

3. Deodorant – Yup. Because it's hot out, stores actually will put deodorant on major sale in June.

WHAT TO SELL

Consignment Stores

1. TurnStyle and Nu Look Consignment are eagerly awaiting your spring and summer items – think light fabrics and bright colors. Don't forget your gently worn shoes and accessories, too.

REMEMBER – call first to set up an appointment, have all your items to consign on a hanger, and if one store won't take your stuff, try another!

Garage Sales

1. Baby gear and home décor. When people clean out their "junk", it opens up more space to buy yours.

2. Tools and working electronics. These are the biggest sellers for men at garage sales. Hands down.
