NJ Forest Fire 100 Percent Contained

Posted: Updated:
Washington Township, NJ -

Firefighters are continuing to contain a forest fire in Washington Township. The Fire originally broke out Sunday afternoon.

Officials say the fire is now 100 percent contained at the Wharton State Forest near Quaker Bridge Sandy Ridge Road. More than 1,600 acres have burned but firefighters say the flames are in a remote area, not threatening any people or campgrounds. Crews will continue to monitor the fire to make sure that it does not jump over containment lines. They said Monday's rainy weather helped with containing the fire.

A morning haze blanketed the Philadelphia skyline on Monday. That is partly blamed on the forest fire. Other areas in the region are experiencing air quality issues.

An Air Quality Action Day has been declared in parts of New Jersey and New York City which stretches over 90 miles away from the forest fire.

The EPA says due to the smoke and fine particles in the air, people should try to limit outdoor activities. It's the first time this year New York City's air quality index has reached a level worse than "good."
