11-Year-Old Boy Shot in North Philadelphia

NORTH PHILADELPHIA -

An 11-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being hit in the crossfire at a North Philadelphia shooting this afternoon.

The child was taken to Temple hospital in critical condition.

Police said the victim was outside playing with a handful of his friends when he was shot, from what could have been an exchange of gunfire.

Now they're searching for the person or persons responsible for shooting an innocent young boy.

"We heard the gun shots and told the kids to hit the floor, that's it," neighbor Edwina Billips said.

A barrage of gun fire around 4 p.m. near the intersection of Oxford and Gratz left one child shot and several others shaken up.

"I was hurt because my son played with him. It could've been my son," one neighbor said.

"That could have been my daughter. We live right here where it happened at," neighbor Tyaria

Police said a stray bullet hit an 11-year-old boy in the right hip while he was outside playing basketball with several other children right in front of his house.

They said he ran inside for help and was rushed to Temple hospital.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said they found 15 shell casings from a large caliber semi-automatic gun and five parked cars in the area, hit by the gunfire.

"As tragic as this is, with 15 shots fired, it could have been worse," Small said.

Small saaid the possible shooter is in his mid 20s, and drove away in a blue Mercury Grand Marquis after firing out in the street.

He said several surveillance cameras, including one on a nearby school, likely caught the incident.

Community activists posted flyers to try and stop the violence.

Neighbors said they're tired of so many innocent children being shot.

"It's a shame that this happened. You know every time you turn around its children being caught in the crossfire. It's wrong and it's dead wrong. Someone needs to speak up if they know anything," Aaron Deshields said.

The name of the boy has not been released.

If you have any information about the shooting, you're asked to call Philadelphia police.
