CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

If only the faceless, life-sized human statues found throughout Grant Park could talk.

Eighteen of the 26 statues, which have been on display since August 2013, have been hit with graffiti for the first time, said Bob O'Neill, president of the Grant Park Conservancy.

"I was at the park today and saw a kid run up to one of the statues – that's normal – people like them," O'Neill said. "And the kid stopped and said, ‘Mommy this one has graffiti.' People take so many photos, just defacing them is very upsetting."

O'Neill said the vandals likely struck late Friday or early Saturday.

"We don't have any cameras," he said. "Sometimes, I think we could really use them."

Titled "Borders," Icelandic artist Steinunn Thorarinsdottie created the faceless statues. They have already been on display in Dallas and New York and were set to go to Detroit following their showing in Chicago.

O'Neill said he isn't sure how much it will cost to repair the half silver aluminum, half iron statues, either.

"You don't want to wreck the art," he said. "It all depends on the finish."

O'Neill, who was at Grant Park Saturday afternoon assessing the damage, said he's received nearly a dozen calls since the statues were hit. He added each statue is spray painted with similar symbols.

"I really hope police recognize the taggers," he said. "The Chicago Police Department called me and are looking into this. They are taking it very seriously."

The statues will be displayed throughout Grant Park until October and can be found near Michigan Avenue and East Jackson Drive.
