2 dead, toddler survives high-speed crash on Interstate 694

FRIDLEY, Minn. (KMSP) -

Two people were killed in a high-speed crash Friday night on Interstate 694 in Fridley, Minn., but somehow, a 2-year-old boy survived nearly unscathed.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Chrysler 300 was traveling at about 100 miles per hour when it rear-ended a semi on eastbound Interstate 694 at Matterhorn Drive shortly after 8 p.m.

Family members who spoke with Fox 9 News late Sunday night said investigators told them the vehicle was traveling at least 120 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

The driver of the car -- 32-year-old Wilbur Hooks, of Hopkins, Minn. -- and his wife -- 31-year-old Patrice Hooks from Hopkins -- were killed in the crash, and family members say Patrice was pregnant. Their 2-year-old son, Bishop, was also riding in the car, but survived without any serious injuries in his car seat.

The driver of the semi, identified as 68-year old Steven Pothen, of Wadena, Minn., was not hurt.

Court records show that Wilbur Hooks had been convicted of drunken driving twice in the past. In 2007, he was ordered to serve 180 days in the workhouse. Three years later, he was sentenced to three years in prison. As recently as 2012, he was arrested for driving after his license was revoked.

Family members confirmed that Wilbur Hooks was driving without a license, and his aunt, Brenda Hunter, said the family is "devastated" because he "should not have been driving.

"Now we are left with the emptiness of not knowing why he was ever going 120 mph," she said.

Hunter added that Patricia Hooks usually drives, and that the couple had just purchased the car, family members said.

Bishop has been placed in protective custody, but family members expect to reunite with him on Monday. UPDATE: Toddler reunited with grandmother

Crash investigators say the roads were clear and dry at the time, but they are still investigating the cause.
