Twin Cities has coldest 4 month stretch since 1936

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The old phrase "misery deserves company" couldn't have a better use than what all of us experienced over the last 4 months. But just like the phrase, at least we aren't alone.

The Twin Cities get to share our awful winter with our neighbors to the southeast; Chicago. While we didn't actually set a record, we made another top 10 cold list for the 10th coldest 4 month stretch in city history and the coldest since 1936.

Many would argue, if it wasn't for the "urban heat island effect" that this could be the coldest on record.

But it wasn't just the metro who enjoyed a phenomenally cold winter, the other 2 official data sites in the area were colder. St. Cloud had its 3rd coldest 4 month stretch in history averaging a temperature of a staggering 9.8 degrees. But Eau Claire takes the cake setting a record for the coldest 4 month stretch in city history weighing in at a whopping 11.6 degrees.

Below is a combination of the yearly 4 month temperature graphs as well as the top 10 lists for each city.

I mentioned sharing our misery with Chicago… well they experienced their coldest 4 month streak in city history as well, just like Eau Claire, with an average temperature of 22 degrees. Not to mention, they also had their 3rd most days with at least an inch of snow on the ground. Coincidence? Nope! The longer you have snow on the ground, the colder your temperatures will be.
