22 People Hurt In Crash That Sent SEPTA Bus Into Parking Lot

Posted: Updated:

Nearly two dozen people hurt when a car crashes into a SEPTA bus Friday afternoon. And there is word a passenger may have jumped in to the driver seat to help after impact.

It was just before 5 p.m. when officials say a car traveling westbound on Vine Street ran a red light and slammed into the Route 23 bus traveling northbound on 11th Street.

The bus then jumped the curb and barreled into parked cars in a church parking lot before it stopped.

Authorities say the bus operator may have passed out at the wheel after the impact

Officials say 22 people suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, including two people who were in the car. They were rushed to nearby hospitals.

In addition to that, bus parts and other debris were scattered on the ground at the scene.

Officials told FOX 29 News they are still working to confirm a witness' account that a passenger jumped behind the wheel or maybe even put a foot on the brake to bring the bus to a complete stop. Officials will be able to confirm that once they get their hands on the bus surveillance video.

Meanwhile, there was frustration and confusion Friday night as relatives tried to connect with loved ones at local hospitals.

FOX 29's Thalia Perez was live Friday night outside Hahnemann University Hospital in Center City with the reaction from upset relatives.
