April 3 - 4 Storm Snow Totals

An impressive late season storm rolled through the Upper Midwest bringing plenty of moisture and SNOW. A thin band of heavy snow developed across the area which included the metro in some of the heftier totals with up to a foot in the north and west metro and up to 18" in northwest Wisconsin.  No records were broken though as the "official" total at MSP Airport came in at just 5.9" despite many areas near the airport recording over 7".  This wouldn't be watches so closely on a regular basis, but with a spot in the top 10 April snowstorms at stake, the number is watched very closely.  Here is a list of the top 10 April snowstorms on record for the Twin Cities.  Remember that these come from the official measurements at MSP Airport.

It would have taken over 7.4" to get into the top 10 which was missed by very little. If you remember last year... a similar storm coming in the middle of the month came just a couple tenths of an inch shy of breaking into the top 10 as well.  Anyway, here is a full list of your snow totals and a map that shows 24 hour totals from 7AM Thursday to 7AM Friday.  This map does not quite include all of the snow, so some areas represented may be a little low in overall accumulation.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
