Cubs celebrate 100 years at Wrigley Field home opener

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Chicago Cubs celebrate 100 years at Wrigley Field Friday, as they host the Philadelphia Phillies on the North Side.

The game began at 1:20 p.m. Gates opened two hours before the first pitch.

Good Day Chicago's Corey McPherrin spoke with Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts, his wife Laura and Todd Ricketts, regarding what's new for the team and new at the park this season. Cubs Sales and Partnerships Vice President Colin Faulkner spoke on anticipated ticket sales and new merchandise for fans to check out.

Cubs Marketing Senior Directors Alison Miller joined official team mascot Clarke the Cub to share the fun in store for fans young and old at the park this year too! Weber Grill Chef David Burns shared the new food fans will find at Wrigley and shared some recipes as well. Yum!

Cubs fans heading north on the CTA Red Line won't have to take a detour. The Chicago Transit Authority announced Thursday that trains will stop at Addison from 10:50 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. Friday.

The agency had previously said trains would not stop there between these times due to maintenance work. The CTA now says a clerical error led to an alert about this service change.

During last year's Cubs opener, nearly 15,000 riders came through the Addison Red Line stop.

For those of you commuting into the city for the game, there's a free, alternate spot to park this season. The Cubs have purchased space along North Rockwell, south of Irving Park - just east of the Chicago River. The parking service includes shuttle transportation to and from Wrigley Field.

The space will be open for Friday's game and for both weekend games against the Phillies. Throughout the season, it will be open during night and weekend games.

A new neighborhood protection ordinance is beefing up security on game days around Wrigleyville. There will be 10 additional Chicago police officers and 10 more Cubs personnel outside after every home game. FOX 32's Lisa Chavarria has the details.

Wrigley Security: Extra policing in place for Cubs home opener

The long security lines White Sox fans saw at U.S. Cellular Field on Monday won't be impacting Cubs fans at the Friendly Confines just yet. Major League Baseball called for increased security around the nation, but the Cubs are holding off on the new policies. They will be mandated next year.

While some are happy about the extra security, others don't believe it will make much of a difference.

Community leaders around the ballpark continue the debate with the Ricketts family about how the neighborhood should change – or as some business owners say, stay the same – as the organization reinvents itself on the North Side. FOX 32's Darlene Hill has the details from the neighborhood on Friday.

As Wrigley Field turns 100, Good Day Chicago's Jake Hamilton took a look at some historical facts you may not have known.

The park is quite the pioneer, being the first to allow fans to keep foul balls, the first to have permanent concession stands and the first stadium to have organ music.
