Community members are furious and want answers about what happened to a black Labrador. Dutch the dog was found with a bullet wound. And just when it looked like veterinarians might save him, Dutch died.
Julie Long found Dutch in her driveway in Oglethorpe County, soaked in blood. She said she could tell it was a bullet wound. Terry Allen was one of Dutch's owners. They took Dutch to the veterinarian and they were told they would need to amputate his leg – a $2,000 bill they said they could not afford.
Long's daughter got in touch with the group Angels Among Us Pet Rescue. They posted the story on their Facebook page and agreed to foot the surgery bill. Allen and his family surrendered ownership of Dutch to the rescue group, to ensure the dog would be properly cared for. Unfortunately, FOX 5 learned Dutch died Thursday night.
Now, the family and neighbors want justice for the dog they said loved playing with kids. The investigation is ongoing.
