Pet Bobcat Missing In New Jersey

STAFFORD TWP., N.J. -

Missing cat flyers line the streets throughout the Beach Haven community in Stafford Township.

"Sounds like a house pet that got out. He's just a little bigger than most cats," said Walter Wiedmont.

Rocky, as named on the flyer, may be domesticated but he's no ordinary cat. He's actually a bobcat, and he's been missing from his home for more than a week now. Wiedmont isn't too concerned.

"It has no front claws and I've seen pictures of it playing with other kittens, laying around the house and it seems very docile. It just doesn't seem like a very wild cat," he said.

But some neighbors disagree. Thomas DeRosa says his wife saw it when it got out.

"He went up two houses up, turned around and came back. He went under a couple houses then took off. Then the next thing you know we saw all these police cars lined up and down here," said DeRosa.

The General Manager of Popcorn Park Zoo told Fox 29 that they helped Animal Control with tranquilizing equipment and setting up a trap in the woods nearby hoping to catch it.

Derosa is worried about kids and neighbors who walk daily.

"They could be walking on the opposite side of the street and if that cat comes out looking for a leg for lunch who knows," said DeRosa.

Some want the bobcat gone from the neighborhood while others want it home with its owners.

"I think it's pretty cool. Who wouldn't want to have some kind of wild cat as a pet," said Wiedmont.

We called the woman who owns the animal and stopped by her home. We have not heard back from her yet. Zoo officials say they're not sure if it's a bobcat or bobcat hybrid. They say Fish and Wildlife Services may have to get involved if it's caught.
