Gophers no stranger to NIT title game

Posted: Updated:

The Gophers mens basketball team will face SMU tonight in the NIT Championship game at Madison Square Garden. It marks the fifth time the team has played in the title game since 1980. Minnesota defeated Florida State 67-64 in overtime on Tuesday night to advance while SMU defeated Clemson in comeback fashion to punch their ticket to the championship game.

The Gophers (24-13) have won six of their last eight games and will attempt to win their second NIT crown. They defeated Georgetown in 1993 and defeated Penn State in 1998, but had that title nullified due to the academic fraud scandal. Most recently, they lost to Stanford in 2012.

SMU is led by hall of fame coach Larry Brown and was one of the final teams on the outside of the NCAA tournament. Tap is set for 6 p.m. central time.
