OSHA fines company following September construction death

Posted: Updated:

Rachel Contracting Inc., based in St. Michael has been fined nearly $52,000 for violations following an accident that killed 61 year old Johnny Valek, of Plymouth after a September construction accident.

Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health found three serious violations and levied the fines after a concrete section collapsed on the cab of his backhoe. The accident took place on the site of the new St. Paul Saints ballpark. According to the federal OSHA website, the company contested the citations last month.

Rachel Contracting is the subcontractor for the project. Ryan Companies is the main construction company for the project and OSHA closed their case in February finding no violations against Ryan Companies.
