LA's Streets Are Worst in Nation! Half Cent Sales Tax Proposed to Fix Them

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11) Two Los Angeles City Council members spent the last 15 months putting together a comprehensive look at the city's street.  The findings?  "We have the worst streets than in any city in the country, the worst streets," said Councilman Joe Buscaino.

The city has more than 28,000 lane miles and roughly a third are in poor condition.  But if you drive in Los Angeles, you probably already figured that out when you get one more split tire or your car needs an alignment.

Walid Elbayar drives in the city, "You hit pot holes all the time.   If you're going at the posted speeds, it will pull your car out of the lane, that's how bad the pot holes are."

Los Angeles needs $3.5 billion dollars to fix all the streets, broken curbs and sidewalks.  Street repair money from gas taxes doesn't even come close to that amount.

Council members Buscaino and Mitch Englander propose a half cent sales tax. They say, it would cost the average person $25 a year and the tax would go away as soon as enough money is raised to do all the fixes. Englander goes on to say, that drivers are already indirectly paying for the streets in all the car repairs they incur driving the rough roads.  "According to an independent expert that rates all the streets in the nation .. we pay on average $832 a year in car maintenance.  That's more than double the national average"

What do you think?  Will that extra tax send people over city limits to avoid the tax?
