North Memorial Hospital offers state's first milk donation program

Posted: Updated:

North Memorial Hospital is the first in Minnesota to offer a donation program for nursing moms to drop off their extra milk for babies whose mothers are unable to produce milk for various reasons.

The new program ensures the milk is safely screened and pasteurized at the University of Iowa Milk Bank. Donating moms are also put through a screening process and blood tests before their milk is accepted into the program.

For most babies, especially premature babies, breast milk is considered easier to digest than formula. Prior to establishing the program, North Memorial had received donor milk from a program at the University of Iowa but high demand for the program has caused a shortage in supply, creating the opportunity for the hospital to set up its own program.
