APRIL FOOLS' FALLOUT: Kitchen fire text lands Hopkins teen in hot water

Posted: Updated:
HOPKINS, Minn. (KMSP) -

Many people play pranks on April Fools' Day, but one high-tech attempt at humor didn't have firefighters laughing on Monday. In fact, the digital dud could have costly consequences.

What began as an attempt to trick a Hopkins mother with a fib about evacuating a kitchen fire became a full-blown emergency response, and now, the teen behind the text has a warning about crying wolf in the digital age.

Davion Eady told Fox 9 News he never expected his mother would call 911, sending firefighters from two different cities racing in his direction. In fact, it took the 18-year-old four minutes to tell her it was all a joke.

By that time, three fire rigs were already en route from Hopkins with additional help coming in from Minnetonka. Since those departments are paid on call, the Hopkins fire chief estimates the prank cost at least $500, which means police can turn the case over to the city attorney for possible misdemeanor charges -- and they plan to.

"Obviously, this is not a joking matter," Sgt. Mike Glassberg said. "What if one of the squad cars had an accident on the way there? Firefighters are all rushed to fire. We all joke it's April Fools, but it's really not. You are playing with peoples' lives."

As for Eady, he says he's prepared to accept the consequences and has learned his lesson.

"If I have to pay it, it's something I have to do," he said. "I made the joke, so I have to be the one to take ownership for it. If that's what happens, it will be taken care of."

Eady wasn't the only person to take an April Fools' prank too far this year either. A South Carolina mother called her daughter to claim a gunman was loose on the Virginia College Campus where she works. Police say that daughter also called 911 after being told her mother was hiding in a school closet after hearing shots fired. Angela Timmons was eventually arrested.
