MEDICAL MARIJUANA: New TV ad turns up heat on Dayton

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Supporters of medical marijuana are taking their argument to the airwaves in Minnesota with a new television advertisement that accuses Gov. Mark Dayton of standing in the way of patient care.

The ad by the Washington-based Marijuana Policy Project features Angela Garin, a St. Paul mother who explains how cannabis helped treat her son's seizures.

"I heard medical marijuana could help, and we tried it," she explains in the ad. "Paxton's seizures were down 88 percent on medical marijuana."

Paxton Garin has a condition called polymicrogyria, a condition caused by abnormal brain development before birth that presents itself in hundreds of daily seizures.

Along with the Garins story, the ad also features local headlines on the hot-button topic -- including the controversial allegation that Dayton told parents and patients that they have an "illegal option" to procure the drug by buying it on the street.

Dayton's office responded to the ad through a statement from his press secretary that said, "They have every right to express their views. That is what democracy is all about."

As for Dayton's view, the governor has repeatedly expressed that while he feels compassion for the families advocating for medical marijuana, he also believes it's unfair to characterize him as the only obstacle to the bill's passage.

From the beginning of the debate, Dayton said he would support legislation as long as law enforcement is on board; however, advocates argue police should not be able to dictate medical policy or patient care procedures.
