First wave of new pre-K spots coming to NYC

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced 4,268 new pre-kindergarten seats in all five boroughs for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Lawmakers in Albany and Gov. Andrew Cuomo struck a deal on a state budget that includes $300 million for pre-K programs in New York City.

"Today, we are more than 4,000 seats closer to ensuring that every 4-year-old has access to high quality full-day pre-K," de Blasio said in a statement. "For months, we have been planning every facet of these programs to ensure we were ready to launch the moment funding was secured. Today, the rubber hits the road, and families will have more options for their children."

If you want to apply for admission to a public school pre-K program, the deadline is April 23. The pre-K programs at community groups will have later deadline.

New York City is hoping to offer pre-K programs to all 73,250 eligible pupils by the 2015-2016 school year.

Step through the doors of Hope's Land of Candy in Island Park, Long Island and you''ll be taking a trip back in time. There's no WIFI but they do have a Victrola piano. And then there's the candy.. lots and lots of it.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
