POTHOLE PATROL: Minneapolis pulls $1M to speed up repairs

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The city of Minneapolis is pulling $1 million from the city's contingency fund just to speed up pothole repairs after a harsh winter left many municipal roads looking more suited to moon rovers than cars.

On Tuesday, the Minneapolis Transportation and Public Works Committee approved an extra injection of funds to combat the craters popping up all over the city.

"With the million-dollar effort here, we'll be able to nearly double our effort for the first couple of months in the spring," Mike Kennedy said.

For many motorists in the metro, potholes have become a costly problem. Tammy Dezotell has only been in town for two weeks, and she has already replaced a tire.

"They were brand new," she told Fox 9 News. "They had 1,900 miles on them, and boom -- took out the side wall."

This year's batch of potholes are bigger and worse than those seen in previous seasons, according to public works crews. That means it'll take more manpower and more material to get them patched up.

"The main streets with the higher traffic volumes and higher speeds will probably get attention first," Kennedy explained. "Then, we'll work into the residential streets."

Normally, the city has six full-time repair crews out on the streets. Now, officials hope to send out 11 crews and hire contractors to operate two mobile pothole patching sprayers. Although they don't keep track of how many potholes they repair, Kennedy said it is safe to assume those crews will be busy through September.
