MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The weather stayed quiet Wednesday, but a couple of waves bring rain and accumulating snow to Twin Cities and neighboring areas on Thursday and Friday.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the Twin Cities metro that spans from Thursday into Friday although the flakes and drops are expected to start on Wednesday night.

The watch area stretches from the eastern counties of South Dakota into the northwestern portion of Wisconsin through Minnesota.

TIMELINE

Wednesday evening: Rain will turn into a wintry mix overnight.

Thursday morning: Rain, heavy at times, will mix with snow and sleet.

Thursday afternoon: Well will stay in the 30s as we dance between a rain and wintry mix, but accumulations aren't expected until Thursday evening.

Thursday night: Moderately heavy snowfall is expected after midnight and into Friday morning, with 6-10 inches possible.

Friday morning: The heaviest bands of snow are expected between 2 a.m. and 10 a.m., with snow tapering off by noon.

Saturday: Sunny 40s will melt a lot of the snow on Saturday.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The timing of the snowfall could make for a nasty commute on Friday morning. Metro snow totals are predicted in the 6-10 inch range, but higher snowfall totals are expected in the west. In fact, some areas could see even more wet, heavy snow that may be difficult to shovel.

MORE: Accumulating snow possible by end of week

The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities expects the heaviest snowfall will be seen in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Winds will also pick up speed as they transition from the northeast to the northwest, with gusts up to 35 mph expected.
