Red Wing, Minn. wants to be a foodie haven

RED WING, Minn. (KMSP) -

The city of Red Wing, Minn. is hoping to lure up to 3 chefs and restaurateurs to its charming downtown about an hour southeast of the Twin Cities.

The Red Wing Restaurant Challenge will provide selected restaurateurs with a package of financial incentives and professional support worth up to $40,000. The package includes:

- $25,000 cash
- Discounted rent
- Radio and newspaper advertising
- Accounting, legal and insurance services
- Bank account and payroll help
- Free energy audit

Red Wing Downtown Main Street, Inc. and the Red Wing Port Authority partnered to organize the challenge.

"The only prerequisite is a love of food and a desire to help Red Wing open tasty restaurants," they said.

Market data from 2010 shows demand for restaurants and bars in Red Wing exceeded $30.5 million annually, but the establishments in downtown Red Wing have a current capacity of just $20 million.

Red Wing has the Mississippi River, beautiful bluffs, history and charm," challenge organizers said. "But it has a lack of flavor -- a flavor we would all like to taste."
