Former Phillie Pete Rose Discusses Second Chances

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. -

Just in time for the start of baseball season, Major league great and former Phillie Pete Rose made a stop today in Chester County.

With Easter right around the corner, the church has been teaching about giving others second chances in life.

They couldn't think of someone who has been denied one more than Rose.

"Let's give a big Philadelphia welcome to Pete Rose," Senior Pastor Brian Jones said.

Met with a standing ovation, the Major League Baseball legend spoke to the crowd at Christ's Church of the Valley in Royersford.

"Shibe Park. How about the area that was in. That was a fun ride. You remember Shibe Park? You look like you opened it," Rose joked.

Sitting with Jones, the ball player nicknamed Charlie Hustle shared stories about his time in the big leagues.

The all-time hits leader also touched on his influence on the Phillies World Series winning team in 1980.

"When I got to the Phillies in 79, Mike Schmidt was the best player in the league three days a week, maybe four. And after playing with me a year he became the best player in the league seven days a week because I made Mike understand you're not going to hit a home run every day, so lead with your glove, lead with your base running, lead with your leadership," he said.

Jones says they brought Rose to the church as an example of forgiveness.

"Every single person, regardless of what they've done and where they've been deserves a second chance," Jones said.

Rose has been denied a second chance since he was banned from the game 25 years ago for betting on baseball, making him ineligible for the hall of fame.

Those who attended the service said they  would like to see Rose get enshrined in Cooperstown.

"You can't deny what he's done for the game and what he can still offer for the game," Steve Romeu said.

"There has to come a certain time as a human being where you got to say he served his penance," Matt Villei said.

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig is entering his last season as the head of baseball.

He has talked about reconsidering reinstating Rose in baseball, but has never acted on that request.
