Breast Cancer Patient Finds A New Way To Fight The Disease

Posted: Updated:

A San Diego woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time took a new way of fighting the disease and so far, so good.  She is cancer free.

Anastasia Berkheimer beat cancer the first time with radiation, but it was painful.

"So I went to a local Doctor and asked him, what's the matter with me, he said you have second to third degree burns, "recalls 2nd time cancer survivor, Anastasia Berkheimer.

She continues, "I thought I was fine but then one test turned out to be not good. Christmas came and I said this might be the last Christmas and my birthday came and I said this may be my last birthday."

It was right around that time Berkheimer heard about Scripps proton therapy center opening in San Diego. It aims to treat cancer patients with a new laser technology the size of a pencil lead allowing doctors to hit tumors without affecting the surrounding normal tissue.

Berkheimer said, "I had doubts."

Berkheimer gave it a try earlier this month. She became the center's first breast cancer patient.

Unlike her 4 month long radiation treatment, her proton therapy was over in 2 weeks.

"Monday the 17th I finished treatment, Wednesday the 19th I went to practice that was good," remembers Berkheimer.

Now cancer free, she's getting back what cancer tried to take away.

This two-time cancer survivor knows there's still a chance the cancer may come back.

But in her fight  she's happy to be living as she says, as fit as a fiddle.
