MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Some students and faculty at the University of Minnesota are calling on the school to rescind a speaking engagement invitation to Condoleezza Rice.

The former Secretary of State is scheduled to speak at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs on April 17. Her speaking fee is $150,000, according to a Star Tribune report. The university's promotion of the event says it is funded by "a gift from Carlson and the Carlson Family Foundation."

THE CONTROVERSY

Prof. William Messing has introduced a resolution to be considered by the University Senate, calling for Rice's appearance to be canceled based on her role in wartime policies as Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration.

Humphrey School spokeswoman Andrea Cournoyer told the Star Tribune that rescinding the invitation would be inconsistent with their goal of promoting discussion and dialogue.
