MnDOT: Concrete 'scaling' on Hastings Bridge is safe

Posted: Updated:

On Thursday afternoon, the Minnesota Department of Transportation confirmed that the concrete on the recently completed Hastings Bridge is flaking, but officials insist the bridge is safe.

In a release, the project manager for MnDOT stated that the scaling on the concrete railing is a cosmetic issue and the agency plans to fix the problem later this year.

"It's not visually appealing, but the bridge is safe. We've conducted visual inspections and taken core samples which are at a laboratory to determine what caused the scaling," said Steve Kordosky, Hastings Bridge project manager.

The bridge taking Highway 61 over the Mississippi river was floated down the river and lifted into place in early June of last year, and MnDOT says it is still under warranty.
