JOLIET, Ill. (Associated Press) -

The Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois are sending nearly 28,000 boxes of cookies to U.S. military personnel overseas.

The (Joliet) Herald-News reports the cookie donation is part of an annual effort by the organization.

This year's donation, which amounts to nearly 600,000 cookies, is the largest ever by the Girl Scout council that oversees about 1,500 area Girl Scout troops.

The Girl Scouts are partnering with Joliet-based Operation Care Package to send the cookies abroad.

Debbie Smothers is Operation Care Package's founder. She says the group has a list of about 2,800 soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who have requested care packages.

She says the cookies are a popular treat, adding the recipients "don't care if they're melted or not. They just tell us to keep sending them."
